Backers of Cordoba House certainly didn’t make it easy on themselves by hoping to give the project such a historically loaded and strangely symbolic name. Lower Manhattan’s new 13-story community center and mosque was to be named after the Spanish city in Andalusia, which hosted several bouts of holy war until being snatched back in the Catholic reconquista. Not particularly good inspiration for building bridges. Adept historians might also recall that Cordoba’s Great Mosque was incidentally fashioned out of an old cathedral when Islam dominated the region, a nasty little hang-up with the name called to attention by Newt Gingrich among others.
