Results of last week’s USG elections are in. As the newly elected prepared to take office, The Extinguisher was on campus gathering students’ impressions of the candidates’ campaigns strategies. On campus, there were signs, flyers, and lots of chalking being done.

Khan/Jamil win student elections by landslide

Yesterday, polls closed on the UIC Student Elections, leaving Roshina Khan the projected winner for UIC’s Student Member of the Board of Trustees seat with 38.8% of the vote, and Saad Jamil projected to win the Undergraduate Student Government (USG) Presidency with 50.6%. The results are not final until any pending complaints are resolved and the vote is certified by the Office of the Dean of Students.

Student Elections in dead heat

Preliminary results posted to the UIC Dean of Students webpage at 4:00pm yesterday, showed Student Trustee candidates Richard Stanton and Roshina Khan in a virtual tie for first with 293 and 288 votes respectively, while candidates Ken Thomas and Alex Rogers trailed with 160 and 91 votes. Should you even bother to vote in this year’s Student Elections?

I have earned a reputation among those-who-pay-attention as being a harsh critic of student governance at UIC and the political party known as Students for Better Government. There is little I can say at this point that won’t simply echo the hazing I have given student leaders and administrators alike on my blog usgwatchdog.com. However, because Student Elections are a major event at UIC, I would be remiss to not reflect the opinion of the Argus editorial staff as a matter of public record.
