An “emergency†Graduate Employees Organization (GEO) meeting took place last night in Student Center East to push a final decision on strike action. Key speakers, at the closed gathering, stated that work stoppages by graduate students in every department would disrupt business as usual, and hoped to drum up full participation.

Graduate employees move closer to a contract… or a strike

Representatives from both sides of the UIC graduate employee contract talks met last Wednesday to clarify certain language and hammer out non-economic issues. The Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service has reportedly agreed to step in and act as a go-between for either side at virtually no charge, with at least two mediation sessions expected to be held before any extreme action can be legally initiated.

Cupcakes end financial crisis at UIC

Thanks to a number of unprecedented financial maneuvers, administration officials at UIC announced an end to all budgetary concerns for many years to come. Inspired by many student-run organizations, the university began desperately hustling baked goods and hot chocolate as of last Monday morning. Earlier figures suggest that UIC raked in nearly $3 billion in total, signifying one of the most prolific fiscal turnarounds in school history.

Graduate student workers poised to strike

Last night, the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) Graduate Employees Organization (GEO) voted 95% in favor of authorizing a strike should bargaining fail to produce an acceptable contract to the University’s graduate student employees. It took nearly 30 minutes to usher in the long lines of nearly 200 GEO Union members who attended the meeting, but according to Charles Moss, Interim GEO President, the meeting went very well.
